About the Shovlin Family
Shovlin Mattress Factory is a family owned and operated business led by husband and wife team Ron and Kara Shovlin.
Originally founded in 1972 as The Mattress Factory, the business became part of the Shovlin family in 1987 when Marlene and Richard Shovlin purchased it. Long before taking ownership, the family was deeply involved. Marlene ran the office, and Ron started working part-time at just 13 years old.
The business was originally based in Garwood, New Jersey, and relocated just a few miles away to Fanwood in 2007 to stay local. Shortly after the move, the name was changed to Shovlin Mattress Factory®, and Ron became the sole owner of the flagship store. If you stop by today, there’s a good chance you’ll meet Ron in person. At 6'7", he’s hard to miss.
Built for a Long-Term Relationship
For more than 50 years, we’ve been handcrafting mattresses right here in New Jersey. Every mattress is made on site in our Fanwood factory using only USA-sourced materials. By keeping manufacturing local, we maintain a small carbon footprint, strict quality control, and the ability to customize each mattress to match exactly what you like in the bedroom..

The factory part of Shovlin Mattress Factory® is attached directly to our showroom, so every mattress is built by hand just steps away from where you shop. Nothing is shipped in or pulled from a warehouse. Real people handcraft every mattress from scratch right here in Fanwood. Because we oversee the process from start to finish, every mattress reflects the same craftsmanship, quality, and attention to detail we’ve been known for since 1972.
