The Hidden Cost of Sleeping Poorly

Most people know poor sleep feels awful. You wake up tired, your patience is shot, your back hurts, and you’re probably on your third cold brew before 10 AM.

What people don’t always think about is how expensive poor sleep can be.

Not just because you’re buying more coffee, though that certainly doesn’t help. Poor sleep affects how you think, how your body recovers, how productive you are, and how much money you end up spending trying to combat the effects. A bad mattress has a way of following you around long after you’ve gotten out of bed.

Bad Sleep Doesn’t Stay in Bed

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard, modern life has pushed more people to cut back on sleep in order to keep up with work, family responsibilities, and the general pace of everyday life. The problem is that sleep isn’t something we can keep ghosting without consequences.

Poor sleep has been tied to workplace errors, lower productivity, learning and memory issues, and a higher risk of accidents, including drowsy driving. If the wrong mattress is a bad decision you keep waking up with, and it’s impacting your focus, your judgment, and your ability to get through the day, it’s time to rethink what’s going on in the bedroom.

What Good Sleep Is Actually Doing for Your Body

Quality sleep gives the body time to recover and helps the brain process new information. That has a direct impact on memory, learning, immune function, and overall health, which is why sleep matters for every member of the family. Children, especially, rely on sleep to grow and process what they’re experiencing during the day, so when you ask, “What’d you learn at school today?” the answer is hopefully a little better than “nothing.”

Poor Sleep Adds Up

Poor sleep can mean more chiropractor visits, more physical therapy, more massages, more medication, and more money spent trying to get through the day feeling halfway normal. A lot of people try to work around the wrong mattress instead of replacing it, buying a topper, then another topper….then new pillows…then cooling pads…then anything else that might make the bed feel better without actually fixing the problem.

If the mattress still isn’t right, people end up replacing it earlier than they should and repeating the entire process all over again, which means more time, more money, and still more sleepless nights for all the wrong reasons.

Why “Catching Up on Sleep” Doesn’t Really Work

A lot of people treat sleep like something they can catch up on over the weekend, but it doesn’t really work that way. When poor sleep becomes a pattern, a couple of decent nights aren’t enough to undo it.

That’s also why the amount of hours you “sleep” doesn’t tell the whole story. Seven or eight hours on a mattress that’s too old, too hot, too saggy, too small, or simply wrong for your body is very different from seven or eight hours of real, restorative sleep. Spending the night together doesn’t automatically make it a healthy relationship. 😉

A Better Mattress Pays Off in More Than Comfort

At a certain point, the cheap mattress stops being cheap. You’ve paid for the topper, the pillows, the cooling gadget, the chiropractor, the extra coffee, and whatever else has been helping you survive a bed that’s not pulling its weight. There are more fun ways to spend your money, trust us.
