Your Go-To Guide for Mattress Sizes

You know the type of mattress you want—style, brand, material—but now it’s time to settle on that final, critically-important decision: mattress size. If you’re not sure which size makes the most sense for your living arrangement, welcome to your go-to guide for mattress sizes. Let’s break it down.

Twin: 38” x 75”

Twin beds provide enough room to comfortably sleep one person, but not more. They’re a great choice for young kids or those that are tight on space. Bunk beds are also typically sized as two twin beds stacked on top of each other.

Twin XL: 38” x 80”

The twin XL size is just as wide as a traditional twin bed, but affords a few extra inches in length. For this reason, it’s a great choice for taller individuals. You’ll also find that most college dormitories include twin XL beds—an important note when shopping for sheets and comforters!

Full: 53” x 75”

Full mattresses afford more space width wise, which makes them a good choice for growing kids or those that prefer to sprawl out when sleeping. A full bed can accommodate two people, so it’s often a top pick for guest bedrooms (consider: it’s a more affordable guest bedroom purchase than a Queen or King).

Queen: 60” x 80”

Queen mattresses are the most popular type of mattresses. They offer enough space to comfortably sleep two adults, and are large enough to fill up a master bedroom suite. They’re not too big as to be overwhelming in a child or teenager’s bedroom, either.

Eastern King: 76” x 80”

Also often referred to as just a king bed, the Eastern King serves up plenty of space in every direction! It’s a great fit for a master suite and for couples that prefer to sprawl out while they sleep, or have additional pillows, blankets (or even pets) to make room for on the bed.

California King: 72” x 84”

With a reputation for luxury, the California King bed offers the space of a traditional Eastern King bed, but with extra length for taller sleepers. Note that the California King is slightly more narrow than its Eastern King counterpart, which might make it a stronger choice when working with a room that’s long and narrow.

Pro-Tip: Before purchasing a mattress, always measure the space that it will reside in, including the height and width of the doorframes it will need to pass through!
