What Your Sleep Position Says About Your Mattress Needs

Your sleeping position is worth mentioning when you shop for a mattress. How you sleep helps determine where you need cushioning and how your pillow should fit, and those details give us a much better starting point than picking a mattress based on a firmness label alone.

Our Beducators use those details to narrow down the options and find what feels best for your body, and since we build our mattresses right here in our factory, we can customize your comfort instead of asking you to settle for whatever happens to be on the showroom floor. After all, finding your favorite position is only half the fun.

Side Sleepers: Make Room for Your Curves

Side sleeping puts extra pressure on your shoulders and hips, so finding a mattress that cushions those areas comfortably is especially important. Our latex and hybrid options offer excellent pressure relief, thanks in part to responsive Talalay latex that contours to your body without that slow, sinking feeling. Adding a pillow top can also provide extra cushioning without sacrificing the support underneath. You can still enjoy a firmer mattress, even if you appreciate a softer touch in bed.

Your pillow should be high enough to fill the space between your head and the mattress without pushing your neck upward, which is why it’s worth testing both together in your usual sleeping position to make sure your head and neck are properly aligned throughout the night.

Back Sleepers: Support Without the Hard Sell

Back sleeping doesn’t automatically mean choosing the hardest mattress in the showroom. Firmness describes the feel, and a softer surface can still have substantial support underneath. Harder isn’t always better, even in this department.

During your showroom visit, pay attention to the support around your lower back and how far your hips settle into the bed. Our Classic TriZone is a great option to explore, with reinforced construction through the center third of the mattress that distributes weight across more coils for targeted support around your hips and lower back. You can even add a pillow top for a softer feel without sacrificing that support.

You’ll also want to keep the pillow relatively low so your neck has support without your chin being pushed toward your chest. A big, fluffy pillow might look inviting, but the height should suit how you’re lying down.

Stomach Sleepers: Keep Things Level

If you sleep on your stomach, look for a mattress that supports your midsection without letting your hips sink too deeply. A firmer feel can be a useful starting point, though choosing the firmest option available isn’t the assignment. Our Classic Plus, which combines traditional innerspring construction with high-density foam, is one option worth trying if you prefer a more stable feel through your midsection.

A thinner pillow can also help keep your neck in a more comfortable position, so this is one situation where you might want to go easy on the extra fluff. Save that for other activities in bed.

For Those Who Like to Change Positions

You don’t have to commit to one position to pick a mattress. If you fall asleep on your side and wake up on your back, give both positions a proper test before deciding. Notice how easily you can turn over as well as how comfortable you feel once you’ve settled.

A responsive material such as latex quickly regains its shape as you move, which makes our Nirvana collection worth exploring. For a shared bed, its motion isolation is another useful consideration: limiting movement across the mattress can help keep your partner’s sleep separate from your position changes. Every move doesn’t need to become a couples activity.

Put Your Usual Moves to the Test

Come into the showroom ready to get comfortable, and tell our Beducators what you enjoy about your current bed and what you’d like to change. We’ll help you compare mattress feels alongside a suitable pillow. Our mattresses are made to order, so we can discuss custom comfort options instead of expecting your preferences to fit a preset formula.
