Time to Spring Clean Your Mattress?

After months of keeping the house sealed shut to hold heat in and keep the winter chill out, springtime always gives us a chance to open things up and let the fresh air in. But this year, since you’re spending so much time at home right now you might be getting that itch a little more. And, since we spend almost 1/3 of our lifetimes asleep, it’s a great idea to refresh your mattresses as part of your spring-cleaning routine.

4 Ways to Spring Clean Your Mattress

Give it a little refresh or go all out, it’s up to you. Here are some suggestions.

#1: Strip your mattress of all bedding and any mattress pads or covers that you are using. Wash all of these materials in hot water. Add a half-cup to a full cup of vinegar to each load to remove odors and soften the fabrics. It’s a great time to assess your mattress toppers and also the waterproof protectors you have on them, to see how they are holding up and if it might be time to replace them.

#2: If you’re really feeling it, you can go the whole nine yards and carry your mattress outdoors and stand it up in an area where it will receive full sunlight throughout the day. Standing the mattress up will allow fresh air to circulate. The sunshine will help to kill any bacteria hiding in the mattress. If you want to take out some quarantine frustration you can also use something sturdy like a bat, tennis racket, or clean broom to beat the mattress for 10-15 minutes to freshen things up. Let the mattress air out and soak up the sunshine all day if the weather permits. You’ll have the freshest mattress on the block!

#3: If the weather doesn’t permit the outdoor technique or your living situation makes taking the mattress outside difficult, but you still want to give it that extra love, then you can still air it out by standing it up inside your home. Lean the mattress up against a wall near an open window to get light and fresh air. Instead of beating the mattress as you would if you were outdoors, sprinkle the mattress with baking powder and vacuum it thoroughly before you stand it up.

#4: Finally, do a thorough once over and spot clean any stains on your mattress using hydrogen peroxide, upholstery cleaner, or vinegar and baking soda (for a greener clean). Be sure to avoid using too much liquid!

Keep Your Mattress Clean and Comfortable with a Year-Round Routine

  • You might want to vacuum your mattress regularly, especially if you are not using a mattress protector. We recommend doing so each time you change or launder your sheets.
  • Speaking of mattress protectors, we can’t recommend them highly enough. Stuff happens, and when it does you be so glad you used a waterproof full zip enclosure or even a waterproof terry cloth cover. The investment you make in a quality mattress will last longer if you use a mattress pad and mattress cover to protect it.
  • Wash your bedding frequently in hot water to keep it clean.
  • You should also flip or rotate your mattress (if needed) to make sure that it wears evenly. Don’t forget, we are happy to come over and take care of that one for you as soon as it’s safe for us to come into your home again!
